The course aims to introduce students to the most important political and cultural events of Croatian History from the Middle Ages to the end of the 20th century. Those key political, cultural, and social aspects of each period will be highlighted and explained within broader European context. Among other topics, the course will deal with the Croatian Kingdom in the Middle Ages and the dynastical changes; the wars against the Ottomans, the cultural achievements of Humanism and Renaissance and the period of the Enlightenment; the formation of modern national identity in the 19th century; the “Croatian question” in multinational states Croatia was part of (Austria-Hungary, Kingdom of Yugoslavia and Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia); and the Homeland War and the creation of contemporary Republic of Croatia.
After taking the course the students will be able to identify crucial events of Croatian history from the Middle Ages to the present day, identify the most important personalities and will be able to state causal relations of these complex diachronic processes.
1. Master basic historiographic concepts and recognize fundamental processes from Croatian history; 2. Distinguish processes of individual historical periods and understand the causality of historical processes and events in history of Croatia; 3. Write a clear and structured paper using relevant literature; 4. Hold a clear and structured oral presentation.

1. Regular attendance at classes – attendance of at least 70 % of classes according to the study program.
2. Fully completed seminar obligations - prepared and submitted presentation, accepted written version of the paper.
3. Obtaining a minimum success rate of 35 % during classes within the assigned teaching activities - achieved cumulatively.
Teaching activities (continuous knowledge assessment, midterm exams, seminar).
Final exam (oral).
a) Teaching activities:
- Seminar obligations – 10 % of the grade
- Midterm exam 1 – 30 % of the grade
- Midterm exam 2 – 30 % of the grade
b) Final exam:
- Final exam – 30 % of the grade (to pass, it is necessary to solve at least 50% of the exam)
